The Power of J/View3D:The Reservoir Challenge
The
Challenge
A West Coast software company specializing in streamline-based
petroleum reservoir simulation needed a 3D visualization solution to better analyze
its data.
INT
received cursory specifications and a sizeable data set of 30,000 cells, 5,000
streamlines, 61 vertical wells, and 4 horizontal wells. INTs challenge was
to visualize the streamline paths taken by the injected water between its injection
in the reservoir and its "production," along with the oil, from the
reservoir.
The
INT Solution
INT developed an advanced application prototype, J/Res3D,
based on J/View3D.J/Res3D displays streamlines to help understand and analyze
how fluids behave in the reservoir.
The
Results
J/Res3D permits any data set to visually integrate different data
simultaneously. It also provides a visual path of well trajectories. As a result,
J/Res3D allows more informed decisions to be made concerning reservoir simulation.
Because
it is built on top of J/View3D, J/Res3D boasts a variety of advanced features
including:
- Show/Hide
Control –Reservoirs, streamlines, and wells can be instantly shown or hidden.
Also, any of the six grid faces can be removed or added at any time.
- Grid and
Streamline Resolution – As the cells computations and display may be very
memory and CPU time consuming, you can lower your grid resolution to increase
performances because several adjacent cells are "grouped" into one, and their
properties averaged appropriately. However, it's important to note that there
are no limitations for the data sizes other than the machine performances and
capacities. For example, a 3,000,000+ cells model can be displayed on a Sun UltraSparc60
with 1 Go (Gigabyte) of RAM.
- Grid
Computation Type – Controls the cell face display. When "outside faces" is
selected, only the cell faces that make up the outside of the reservoir will be
displayed. Otherwise, all faces of all cells will be displayed.
- Grid
Geometry Type – Cartesian and Corner Point Geometry types are available. By
selecting Cartesian geometry, each cell will be represented as a box –all faces
are 2D rectangles. By selecting Corner Point Geometry, the cells will gain a more
realistic 3D shape. In this mode, each cell is defined by height points disposed
anywhere in space.
- Petrophysic
Attributes – Petrophysical attributes can be individually selected and instantly
changed. Possibilities include porosity, permeability, and net-to-gross, just
to name a few. The value of each cell for the selected attribute is represented
by its color.
- Advanced
Slicing Feature – Allows examination of the reservoir slice by slice or any
kind of sub-region.
- Advanced
Transparency Feature – The transparency levels for the reservoir cells, the
streamlines and the wells can be set independently.
